Over thousands of years, God renewed his promise of the coming redeemer through the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, Jesse and David. Accordingly this promise was prophesied to each of the descendant from whom the messiah would come.

The Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke provide a comprehensive and detailed ancestry of Jesus Christ.
St. Matthew records the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ from the ancestral line of Joseph, beginning with Abraham and through King David’s son – SOLOMON. However, during the reign of Jehoiakim, a descendent of Solomon, the king was told that he would never have any future descendant sit on David’s throne (Jeremiah 36:30).
St. Luke on the other hand records the birth of our Lord from the ancestral line of Mary, beginning with God & Adam, through King David’s son – NATHAN. Being the thorough historian, Luke’s work clearly acknowledged that that Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus. Joseph was simply the husband of Mary and the legal guardian of Jesus. It is, through Nathan’s line, that the curse of Jeremiah 36:30 was bypassed.
Regardless of which parental line one follows, it is clear that Jesus’ ancestry fulfilled all the prophecies concerning his lineage as the promised redeemer-messiah. As a direct descendent of King David, through Nathan, Jesus was the last and rightful heir to the throne of David. The old testament Jews understood that their redeemer would be a king from the Royal house of David.
